Prepare the job details

These are practical prompts for your request. They are not legal requirements or rules from any source.

• Give your suburb.
• Describe what you can see or hear, such as a drip, without guessing the cause.
• Say when you first noticed the problem.
• Take photos if you can do so safely.
• Mention parking, gates, pets and where the affected fixture is.
• State your preferred timing and ask the plumber to confirm availability.
• Ask whether the plumber needs to assess the problem before giving a firm repair price.

Ask about attendance and repair costs

Some plumbers charge to attend or diagnose a problem. Ask before the visit:

• What any attendance or diagnosis charge includes.
• Whether that charge is payable if you decline the repair.
• How labour and materials are priced.
• What the quote excludes.
• The total, including any applicable GST.
• How extra work will be approved before it starts.

The Queensland Office of Fair Trading recommends checking that a quote covers the whole job, reading its terms and telling the business to wait for your approval. Read its advice on quotes and contracts.

A request you can adapt

I need a plumber for a planned visit in my Gold Coast suburb. My kitchen tap has been dripping for about a week, and I can send photos. Do you need to inspect it before pricing the repair? Is there an attendance charge, and does it apply if I decline the repair? Please confirm your availability and a written total, and check with me before any extra work.
