Key facts

  • The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) advises checking a quote's terms, costs and fees before accepting it. QBCC: quotes, contracts and variations, reviewed 23 September 2025, checked 2 November 2026.
  • QBCC explains that licensing depends on the type and value of work and identifies exceptions. Check the details of your job rather than assuming all small repairs are exempt. QBCC: when you need a licence, checked 2 November 2026.
  • QBCC recommends checking a contractor's licence before engaging them for work that requires one. QBCC: quotes, contracts and variations, checked 2 November 2026.

What should your quote request include?

Write one item for each job. Say what is wrong, where it is and what you want the finished result to be. For a sticking door, for example, note which door sticks and where it rubs. Add a photo of the whole area and a close-up of the problem if it is safe to take one.

Include your suburb, any relevant measurements, parking or access restrictions, whether the property is occupied and the times an inspection could take place. Say if you already have materials or want the provider to supply them. Mention any known cause or previous repair, but avoid guessing about hidden damage.

You can use this example as a starting point:

I have an internal door that rubs against the frame near the top. I am in Robina and can provide photos and access on weekdays. Please tell me what inspection is needed, what the quote includes, and whether any materials or call-out fees are extra.

This is an example, not a description of a real job. Adjust it to match your property.

How do you compare handyman quotes?

Give each provider the same job list and compare what they propose to do, not just the total. Check whether the quote covers labour, materials, preparation, cleanup and removal of rubbish. Ask about call-out, travel, parking or other fees, whether GST is included, and how long the quote remains valid.

Look for exclusions and assumptions. One quote may cover adjusting a door while another also allows for replacing hardware or repainting. Ask for a written clarification if the scope is unclear. Check whether the amount is a fixed quote or an estimate, what inspection is needed and which conditions could change it. QBCC's guide to quotes and variations explains why understanding costs and terms matters.

What if the job changes after work starts?

Ask the provider to explain any proposed change, its cost and effect on timing before the extra work proceeds. Record what you both agree to in writing and keep the original quote and subsequent correspondence. If hidden damage is found, ask what needs investigation and whether another specialist should assess it before you authorise a repair.

When should you check a licence or call a specialist?

Check the actual work, its value and the appropriate licence before engaging someone. QBCC's licensing guidance, checked 2 November 2026, describes a handyman exemption with conditions and lists work for which separate rules apply. It is not a blanket permission for every small job. If you are unsure, ask QBCC or the relevant Queensland regulator about your specific task and check the provider's current licence and scope.

For a task involving wiring, a plumbing system or gas, identify the appropriate licensed specialist before work starts. See the separate guides to finding an electrician and planning plumbing work. Do not touch an unsafe electrical fault or attempt a repair yourself; seek appropriate help.

If your list also includes outdoor upkeep or cleaning, compare the scope separately using the lawn mowing guide and house cleaning guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should I include in a handyman quote request?

Describe each repair, its location, relevant measurements and access, and add clear photos and your preferred timing.

Is a quote the same as an estimate?

Ask the provider to explain whether the amount is fixed or indicative and what could change it before you agree.

Can a handyman do electrical or plumbing work?

Do not assume a handyman can do every task. Check the work and appropriate licence with the relevant Queensland regulator and engage a licensed specialist where required.
